The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility, is now accepting proposals for the ALCF Data Science Program (ADSP). Launched in 2016, the ADSP aims to build a community of researchers focused on employing data-intensive analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) at a scale that requires the ALCF’s leadership-class computing resources.
Research supported by the ADSP includes the use of advanced statistical analysis, machine learning, and AI techniques to gain insights into datasets produced by experimental, simulation, or observational methods. Previous awards have covered a broad range of techniques and science domains, including the application of deep learning to data from the Nobel Prize-winning Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO); exploring the neuron network inside mice brains through connectomics research; performing large, parallel data analytics on experimental results from the Large Hadron Collider; using AI to advance numerical simulations in materials science; and many others.
The call for proposals will be open from November 2, 2020, to January 29, 2021. The program allocates ALCF computing time and supporting resources to ADSP research teams. Submissions must justify the need for leadership-class systems and describe how the allocated resources will advance the state-of-the-art in the target science domain.
ADSP proposals undergo a review process to evaluate potential impact, data and software readiness, diversity of science domains and algorithms, and other criteria. Awards are two years in duration with a review at the end of the first year. The selected projects will receive support from ALCF staff scientists and postdoctoral scholars. In addition, the ALCF provides training opportunities to familiarize teams with the facility’s hardware and software environments.

ALCF Simulation, Data, and Learning Workshop
To aid proposal preparation, the ALCF is hosting its annual Simulation, Data, and Learning Workshop on December 8-10, 2020. The virtual workshop will include hands-on sessions, tutorials, and guidance on improving the performance and productivity of simulation, data, and learning applications on ALCF systems.
